The Living Zen course continues the Living Philosophy set of courses and examines the ideas and practice of Zen and how these can guide practical action in everyday life.
While this course covers the underlying concepts of Zen Buddhism, it emphasises the practice and experience of the ‘suchness’ of things and of our own true nature. The writings and teaching of D.T. Susuki, Alan Watts, Robert Aitken Roshi, Dogen and other Zen teachers will be used to help participants taste the unique insight and experience of Zen. The course will introduce students to Zen meditation, Kinhin (walking meditation), the use of Koans and the practice of mindfulness. We will ask students to apply these in their daily living.
Topics covered are:
- Zen and Its History
- Zen Meditation and Practice
- The Practice of Mindfulness (Shikantaza)
- Attachments, Zen Mind, Simple Mind
- Koans and Zen Stories
- Continuing the Practice
The course will introduce you to key aspects of Zen relevant to modern life. You will learn how to observe your thoughts, judgements and assumptions about yourself and others. The course leads to improved skills in: being in the present moment, mindfulness, dealing with situations calmly, and clarity of thought and action in your work and home life. The six evenings will consist of the presentation and discussion of different aspects of Zen and the practice of meditation and various Zen techniques.
The course presenters include: Ian Sweetman Roshi, Mark Edwards, and Ron Cacioppe. Ian is the teacher of the W.A. Zen Group and Mark and Ron have been involved with the study and practice of Zen for over 20 years.
